The ecological intelligence behind ALCI's computing system

Nature is not simply a collection of trees, plants, and species. It is a living system where energy, water, soil, climate, and biodiversity continuously interact within landscapes of our planet. The ALCI methodology was developed using knowledge of landscape and ecological processes affirming that the true value of an ecosystem comes from the functions it performs as living interacting components of a landscape.

What is AQUAE Labs Ecosystems Conservation Index

The AQUAE Labs Ecosystems Conservation Index (ALCI) is a comprehensive field-based assessment and monitoring framework designed to evaluate the biomass, biodiversity, and ecological functionality of terrestrial habitat areas. It provides standardized methodologies to classify habitat types, measure vegetative structure and seral stage, and quantify primary ecosystem services and species diversity.

This month’s ALCI update brings an inspiring story from Belipola Arboretum Analog Forest in Sri Lanka a powerful demonstration of how degraded ecosystems can regenerate, grow, and deliver increasing environmental and social value when natural processes are supported through science-based conservation approaches such as Analog Forestry to understand how landscapes evolve and mature, forming a myriad of habitat qualities over time.

Understanding ALCI’s Net Flux Analysis

The ongoing 5 year cycle of ALCI’s flagship valuation of ecosystem services at Belipola Arboretum Analog Forest in Sri Lanka demonstrates the importance of long-term ecological monitoring. Every increase in biomass represents more habitat complexity. Every improvement in vegetation structure contributes to stronger ecosystem functions and more conservation value.

The ALCI MRV approach follows a continuous monitoring pathway.

Net Flux Analysis of Belipola Arboretum Analog Forest compares ecological performance between 2025 and 2026, revealing a remarkable increase in ecosystem productivity across different stages of ecological succession. The results show that Belipola Arboretum is not simply maintaining its natural systems it is actively progressing toward a more complex, mature, and more stable ecosystem.

One of the strongest signals of ecosystem recovery is the growth of above-ground biomass (AGB). This increase reflects the expanding capacity of vegetation to convert sunlight into stored biological material, support ecological processes, and strengthen ecosystem functions. Across the full 7.1 hectares, biomass increased from 4,264,616.7 kg in 2025 to 6,602,431.9 kg in 2026 a net increase of 2,337,815.2 kg, representing an impressive 54.8% growth. It is suggested that this accelerated speed of growth in AGB is due to very high rate of ecological succession observed within the Analog Forest.

Belipola Arboretum recorded a total increase in Photosynthetic biomass the living green component responsible for capturing solar energy and driving primary productivity from 88,665.6 kg in 2025 to 97,717.5 kg in 2026, representing a 10.2% increase. This growth means the landscape is strengthening its ability to perform essential primary ecosystem services, including oxygen generation and water regulation as well as other benefits such as cooling effect, and habitat support.

ALCI values and blockchain

As ecosystems recover and generate measurable environmental benefits, trust, transparency, and accountability become essential. Blockchain technology provides the digital foundation that helps secure ALCI ecosystem records and creates confidence in environmental transactions defined by a published whitepaper. Indicators such as biomass growth, oxygen production, water purification, soil functions, and biodiversity improvements are transformed into verified ecosystem data that is then modulated through a cryptographically secure pipeline to new markets.

Blockchain can securely register these verified outcomes as unique digital records, creating a transparent history of ecosystem value. This helps address one of the biggest challenges in environmental markets: double counting. Each verified ecosystem outcome can be linked to a unique digital identity, ensuring that the same ecological improvement is not issued, sold, or claimed multiple times.

Digitally immutable architectural separation is critical for institutional trust. Guarantors, validators, and institutional buyers cannot rely solely on an ALCI MRV contract. While the ALCI MRV contract is the seminal operational agreement dictating terms of exchange at the landscape level, the management contract alone does not hold marketable value.

Landowners, as custodians of the land and ecosystem assets upkeep the conservation value of those ecosystem services validated through the AQUAE Labs Ecosystems Conservation Index (ALCI) and its associated Monitoring, Recording, and Verification (MRV) contracts and are paid for these ecosystem services through every transaction recorded on the blockchain.

Did you know: Use ALCI to increase your digital asset and ESG values

By combining ALCI’s scientific MRV framework with blockchain technology, nature-based outcomes become measurable, verifiable, and securely managed for institutional level trust to emerge for nature based assets. This creates a stronger connection between ecosystem restoration, responsible investment, and transparent environmental markets for insured financial products to emerge backed by ecosystem conservation and sustainability at the landscape level.

What's Next: USD 4 Million insured ALCI Credits Enter the Market

A new chapter is beginning for the AQUAE Labs Ecosystems Conservation Index (ALCI).

USD 4 million worth of ALCI ecosystems credits are available in pre-sale.

Backed by insurance through our insurance partners, these credits represent an important step toward a more mature and credible nature finance market. This is more than the launch of a new credit offering—it reflects a shift toward treating restored ecosystems as investable, risk-managed assets supported by measurable environmental performance.
