We proved that nature living, breathing ecosystems can be measured, verified and recognised as real economic assets.

At Belipola Arboretum in Sri Lanka, the world’s first Analog Forest, we successfully applied the AQUAE Labs Ecosystem Conservation Index (ALCI) to scientifically track the real value of nature from clean air and water to biodiversity and climate cooling.

High in the mist-covered hills of Sri Lanka, a once damaged tea plantation has become one of the most inspiring environmental success stories on Earth.

In 1982, visionary ecologist Dr. Ranil Senanayake planted the first seeds of what would become Belipola Arboretum, the world’s first Analog Forest.

2025 will be remembered as the year nature finally stepped onto the global financial stage.

We measured carbon removal, oxygen production, water purification, climate cooling, soil vitality and biodiversity.

Within the Belipola Arboretum’s landscape, three ecological (seral) zones were identified across 17.1 acres of highly diverse vegetation serving as a genetic repository of native and endemic species.

In 2025, AQUAE Labs field teams conducted comprehensive Monitoring, Recording & Validation (MRV), including:

• Biomass assessment (AGB & NWAGB carbon capture)
We measured how much carbon is stored in large trees (Above-Ground Biomass) and in smaller plants, grass and leaves (Non-Woody Above-Ground Biomass). This shows how much carbon the forest removes from the air.

• Photosynthetic productivity measurement
We checked how efficiently the forest converts sunlight into energy and produces oxygen, which is essential for all life on Earth.

• Water transpiration & purification analysis
We studied how the forest releases moisture into the air and naturally cleans rainwater as it passes through the soil.

• Micro-climate cooling evaluation
We measured how the forest lowers surrounding temperatures, helping to reduce heat stress and create a cooler local climate.

• Soil Organic Matter (SOM) mapping
We analysed how rich and alive the soil is by mapping organic material that keeps the forest fertile and healthy.

• Biodiversity & faunal surveys
We recorded the variety of plants, birds, insects and animals living in the forest to understand the strength of the ecosystem.

Belipola Arboretum demonstrates that, ecological recovery follows a scientifically measurable and accelerating trajectory of financial value.

ALCI’s foundation lies in its ability to measure, record, validate, and value-set multiple ecological indices within a composite, indexed framework.

Global research estimates the value of ecosystem services at USD 125–145 trillion per year, exceeding conventional global Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Belipola Arboratum proves that ecosystems are a new asset class.
