The most critical and valuable material in maintaining the life support system of the planet is its Photosynthetic Biomass (PB). Yet this material has been unvalued  & therefore provides astounding market opportunities unlocking value potential to the global commons. There is no ‘production technology’ that is more efficient than trees and plants to produce primary ecosystem services (PES) such as Oxygen production. But the amount of PES that they provide varies greatly, depending on age, species, and the environment they grow in. Every tree as it grows eventually reaches a ‘compensation point’, where the accumulation of Photosynthetic Biomass tapers off, net primary productivity ceases, and the tree has enough turn over to respire for maintaining its mature state.

How we value primary ecosystem services using the ALCI approach:

Photosynthetic Biomass is important as it drives oxygen generation and water cycling. Rather than directly measuring all leaves, ALCI estimates Photosynthetic Biomass using fixed proportions of the  Above Ground Biomass (AGB) of each measured site. Based on biomass allocation studies, leaves make up roughly 2% of Woody Plant Biomass in mature tropical trees , and about 50% of Non-Woody Plant Biomass (since herbs and grasses are mostly leaves)

Oxygen production: Through photosynthesis, plants produce oxygen. ALCI estimates the annual oxygen output of a habitat based on its photosynthetic biomass. The conversion is based on the stoichiometry of photosynthesis: producing 1 gram of biomass yields approximately 0.4 grams of oxygen. These oxygen production estimates can be used in valuation (as illustrated in the example below, where O₂ is valued at medical oxygen prices). It also serves as a baseline metric of a habitat’s contribution to atmospheric oxygen for instance, a single hectare in late succession can produce on the order of 300,000+ liters of O₂ per year, although most of it is respired and utilized within the ecosystem itself.

Water purification: Vegetation plays a key role in the water cycle by transpiring water vapor and effectively “distilling” purified water through plant uptake and evapotranspiration. ALCI approximates water distillation via transpiration using a simple ratio: 1 gram of photosynthetic biomass corresponds to approximately 100 grams of water transpired into the atmosphere. This figure can be interpreted as the amount of water cycled through vegetation, potentially contributing to local humidity and groundwater (via plant drip). It serves as a metric of how much “clean water” an ecosystem generates through transpiration. ALCI assigns economic value to this by comparing it to the cost of producing clean water.

Deeper insight of Photosynthetic Biomass to value Whole system Conservation:

What humans actually respond to is not the direct loss of oxygen (%) in the atmosphere, but rather the reduction in oxygen availability, reflected through partial pressure. This is influenced by air quality (pollution load), thermal stress (heat and humidity), and CO₂ concentration in micro-environments. Therefore, successional, symbiotic, and mature ecosystems improve human health by regulating all of these factors together.

Photosynthetic biomass, often considered to be too temporal in accounting for carbon Photosynthetic biomass, often considered too temporary for carbon accounting, is actually the most valuable component. In terms of primary production, it accounts for about 426 gC/m²/yr on land and 140 gC/m²/yr in the oceans. However, when considering the high turnover rates in marine ecosystems and the respiration costs in terrestrial ecosystems, both pools contribute almost equally to global primary production.

This feature should be kept in mind when evaluating the relative value of different types of photosynthetic biomass and primary production units brought to market.

While it can be assessed that oceanic phototrophs produce more net oxygen, terrestrial systems contribute an additional primary ecosystem service: water purification through transpiration.

Oxygen Production - Myth vs Fact

Why is this important in the context of ALCI and evaluating ecosystem health ?

While the total photosynthetic biomass suggests a base value, this value is modified to the ALCI using variables such as gross primary productivity measured in order to define landscape and habitat conservation baselines and net primary production (NPP) as a multiplier to reflect production efficiency of species. Therefore photosynthetic biomass, often considered to be too temporal in accounting for carbon sequestering, is identified as a most valuable component within the ALCI framework. Slowing down the loss of global terrestrial photosynthetic biomass stock is not an option - it is a critical need in the context of a new global Oxygen budget.
