Wealth in a Sustainable World: Tokenized Ecosystem Services

Nature continuously sustains life through interconnected ecological processes. Forests regulate climate, produce oxygen, purify water, build healthy soils, support biodiversity and maintain the natural systems that enable ecosystems and communities to thrive. Understanding these ecosystem services is essential to recognizing the full environmental value that healthy landscapes provide.

The AQUAE Labs Ecosystems Conservation Index (ALCI) is a comprehensive field-based assessment and monitoring framework designed to evaluate the biomass, biodiversity and ecological functionality of terrestrial habitat areas. It provides standardized methodologies to classify habitat types, measure vegetative structure and seral stage and quantify primary ecosystem services and species diversity.

This month's ALCI update explores how ecosystem services can be scientifically measured, verified and translated into real-world environmental assets. From the evolution of environmental markets beyond carbon to the field-verified assessment of the Belipola Arboretum Analog Forest in Sri Lanka, this edition highlights how ALCI is advancing a science-based framework that recognizes living ecosystems for the measurable benefits they continuously generate.

ALCI : Measuring what makes life possible

For over 3 decades, environmental markets have largely been built around one question: How much carbon can we ‘offset’ ? Carbon accounting emerged from an industrial economy attempting to reduce its own damage.

This is why the natural world can never be operated as an accounting exercise in emissions. The newest thinking must extend beyond valuing forests / living soil systems / regenerative farming solely for the carbon they produce and store. Instead, forests must be viewed as living infrastructure whose capacity to perform climate-regulating functions is itself the asset. This is analogous to how reservoirs, power plants and levees are considered physical infrastructure that delivers public services.

An early attempt at utilizing ecosystem services was the capitalization of biomass through the voluntary carbon and biodiversity credit market. In recent times driven by net-zero commitments, mandatory ESG disclosure frameworks and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework's 30x30 conservation targets that simultaneously place 30% of degraded ecosystems under active restoration, create a demand for high-integrity environmental credits. This demand has been accelerating at a pace at which the existing institutional as well as infrastructure cannot adequately serve. The combined addressable market across carbon, biodiversity, water and ecosystem services credits are projected to exceed $370 billion by 2035.

ALCI beyond Offsets, to Onsets

At ALCI, we believe it is time for an economy that recognizes production rather than mining, restoring rather than polluting at the expense of our global commons. Forests provide measurable climate services that can be quantified, monitored, and financed. This shifts attention from static carbon stocks to the dynamic production of an ecosystem’s ongoing ability to generate not only climate benefits, but the foundations to quantify ‘positive externalities’ to the global commons as a tangible economic opportunity. These ecosystem services or ‘positive externalities’ largely ignored by modern economics.

Every ALCI fraction issued to market begins with habitat classification using the IUCN Habitat Classification System, followed by physiognomic mapping, seral stage identification, woody and non-woody biomass measurements, soil organic matter analysis and biodiversity surveys covering mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies and flora. Together these measurements provide a complete ecological profile that is independently verifiable and economically quantifiable.

ALCI : Real World Asset

Belipola Arboretum, the world’s first Analog Forest in Sri Lanka demonstrates how ALCI operates to realize true ecosystem value at the ground level.  Across a 7.1-hectares of Analog Forest ALCI assess annual flux of ecological productivity data and completed its first annual assessment of three ecological zones found within the Analog Forest. Each zone was independently assessed for above-ground biomass using Analog Forestry formulaic approach to verify the Above Ground Biomass ( AGB) and the ecosystem services produced by those sections of forest land.

Above : Two ‘forest formulas’ that representing ALCIs above ground biomass verification module between 2025 and 2026 across 2 Seral Stages of the Analog Forest . These measurable structural changes provide the basis for ALCIs whole system valuation as well as strong scientific evidence that  Belipola Analog Forest continues to develop toward a resilient, biodiversity-rich ecosystem.

Key Findings of the AGB assessment module

  • Seral Stage 3 : The appearance of T3 and W3 compound-leaf evergreen and deciduous layer vegetation layers demonstrates continued regeneration of woody vegetation and increasing vertical structural diversity.

  • Seral Stage 4 : The emergence of a V8(24-35 m) broadleaf evergreen canopy layer indicates continued canopy development even within the most mature sections of the Analog Forest.

  • Climbers and Vines coverage increased from Rare(r) to Patches(p) in seral Stage 4, showing greater structural connectivity within the vegetation.

  • Epiphytes and Lichens expanded into higher canopy layers(X5-6 and L1-8), reflecting increased vertical habitat complexity associated with forest maturation.

Did You Know

Traditional economics excels at pricing extraction (mining). It can value oil before it is burned, timber before it is harvested and minerals before they leave the ground, fruits and vegetables once they are harvested. Everything is extracted, Yet the economy assigns almost no value to the forest quietly producing breathable air every day or for regenerative farmers who are building up soil and providing the last refuges for native biodiversity in their regions.

ALCI represents a paradigm shift from “carbon credits” to “Life-Support Assets.” Where conventional frameworks reduce the infinite complexity of living ecosystems to a single variable, tonnes of CO2. ALCI treats ecosystems as a living, productive, regenerative infrastructure. New ALCI fractions are minted only when independent MRV audits confirm new ecological improvements or when new project areas are integrated into the ALCI network. This ensures that every token in circulation is 1:1 backed by verified, real-world ecological value, allowing the supply to scale with an insured layer of contracted income for landowners and conservation stewards.

What's Next: USD 4 Million insured ALCI credits enter the Market

A new chapter is beginning for the AQUAE Labs Ecosystems Conservation Index (ALCI).

USD 4 million worth of ALCI ecosystems credits are available in pre-sale.

Backed by insurance through our insurance partners, these credits represent an important step toward a more mature and credible nature finance market. This is more than the launch of a new credit offering—it reflects a shift toward treating restored ecosystems as investable, risk-managed assets supported by measurable environmental performance.

Pre-sale of
Fractionalized ALCI Credits
is now live:

We invite governments, businesses and individuals to invest in guaranteeing biospheric integrity while leveraging financial mechanisms to realize new wealth backed by ecosystem services and improve prosperity across societies and cultures.
